To prepare for our Chinese New Year celebration we baked some Chinese fortune cookies which we had prepared a message for, as well as some Chinese moon cakes. we also made red envelopes as it is a Chinese tradition for children to be given gifts, usually of money, in a red envelope on Chinese new year. We made Chinese new years cards for the year of the horse, hats and made some dragons which we enjoyed dancing with to a Chinese dragon dance. W also looked at the story of Chinese new year and how the years became named after each animal, we really enjoyed finding out which animal year we were born in. Some of us were Rats but most were Ox's even Mrs Wingrove but Miss Jeacock was a Tiger. On Thursday some of us enjoyed a Chinese themed hot school dinner.
On Friday we invited friends and family in to join us in our celebrations of the Chinese New Year. Together we made drums, fans, dragon head masks, coloured dragons by numbers and Chinese lanterns. we also had Chinese music in the backgrounds and some of us decided to create a dragon dance for our visitors as well as a Chinese restaurant in the role play area, noodles got everywhere! We shared our baking with our visitors and also ate lots of other Chinese foods and tried some drinks that had been brought from a Chinese supermarket. At the end of the day we were each given a red envelope with some Chinese sweets to try.
